How to watermark a PDF

To watermark a PDF, upload the file, choose a watermark style, type your wording, set the opacity to somewhere between 25% and 35%, apply it to every page and download the marked copy. The whole procedure takes about a minute in a browser, needs no software, and the original file is not changed - you keep the marked copy as a new file.

The procedure

  1. Open the tool and upload your PDF

Choose the file from your device or drop it into the upload area. Nothing is installed and no account is created.

  2. Choose the watermark style

Diagonal for a status mark, Behind the text for branding, Footer for a line at the bottom, Image for a logo, Tiled for a repeating pattern.

  3. Enter the wording

Type the text exactly as it should read - CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, your company name - and pick a colour that reads as deliberate rather than decorative.

  4. Set the opacity

Start at 30% for a diagonal mark over ordinary text, or 20% if the page is dense. The preview shows what the reader will see.

  5. Check the pages

Confirm the mark appears on every page it needs to, and adjust the page range if it does not.

  6. Download the marked copy

Click Add watermark and save the result. Keep the untouched original as your master file.

Settings people get wrong

  • Opacity too high: 60% or more buries the text underneath. Aim for 30%.
  • Marking only the first page: pages get split, printed and forwarded singly.
  • Different wording on different pages: inconsistent marks read as decoration.
  • Marking the master file: keep an untouched original and always work from it.
  • Forgetting the print check: watermarks print stronger than they look on screen.

After the watermark is applied

The result is an ordinary PDF: it opens in any reader, prints on any printer and can be emailed like any other file. The watermark is page content rather than a separate layer that can be switched off, so it travels with the document - including into screenshots, prints and single-page extracts.

Because the marked copy is a new file, nothing about your original is changed. If the wording needs to move from DRAFT to FINAL, apply the new mark to a fresh copy of the master rather than trying to remove the old one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I watermark every page of a PDF?

Leave the page range on its default of all pages. The watermark is drawn onto each page individually, so a 60-page report ends up with the mark on all 60 pages rather than on a cover sheet that gets separated from the rest.

Can I watermark a PDF without Adobe Acrobat?

Yes. A browser-based tool does the same job with no installation and no subscription. Acrobat's advantage is that watermarking sits inside a full editor for people who edit documents all day; for adding a mark it is neither necessary nor free.

Does the original file change?

No. The marked PDF is written as a new file, and the copy you uploaded is deleted automatically within an hour. Keep your own original somewhere safe anyway, so every future mark starts from a clean file.

How long does it take?

Usually a few seconds for a typical document; a few tens of seconds for a few hundred pages. The upload and download are the slow part on a normal connection, not the watermarking itself.
