Diagonal watermark for a PDF
A diagonal watermark is large text rotated across the page, normally rising from the bottom-left corner to the top-right, drawn on top of the document content. It is the most recognisable watermark style and the right choice when the mark has to be unmistakable: CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, COPY or SAMPLE.
Diagonal watermark, centred, 45°
What a diagonal watermark looks like
The text is centred on the page and rotated, so it reads corner to corner behind whatever else is on the page. In our tool the default rotation is 45 degrees and the size is chosen automatically so the word spans most of the page diagonal without touching the edges.
Because it sits on top of the content, a diagonal watermark is intentionally hard to miss. That is the point: it communicates a status at a glance.
- Default rotation: 45° (bottom-left to top-right)
- Default opacity: 25% — visible but the document stays readable
- Type is auto-sized to the page, so A4, Letter and A3 all look right
- Works on portrait, landscape and rotated pages alike

Choosing the wording and the angle
The angle changes the meaning more than you might expect. 45° is the conventional, neutral choice. Around 30° reads as slightly softer and leaves more of the page clear, which is useful on dense text. A steeper 60° is noticeable on wide landscape pages where a 45° mark would sit mostly over the margins. Zero degrees is technically a horizontal watermark rather than a diagonal one, but it is there if you want it.
Frequently asked questions
Will a diagonal watermark cover the text in my document?
It sits in front of the content by design, but at the default 25% opacity it is a tint rather than a solid block, so body text stays readable underneath. If your document is very dense, lower the opacity to about 15% or switch to the Behind the text style, which is drawn under the content instead.
Can I put a diagonal watermark on only some pages?
Yes. Under More options, set Pages to a range such as 1-3, 5, 8-10, or pick first page, last page, odd pages or even pages. The default is every page.
Does a diagonal watermark survive printing?
Yes. The watermark is real page content rather than an overlay added by a viewer, so it prints with the document. If you want it lighter in print, set opacity around 15-20%; some printers render light tints heavier than the screen suggests.
