Dynamic watermark
A dynamic watermark is a watermark whose content changes from copy to copy so each version can be traced back to a specific recipient, for example by stamping a person's name, email address or a unique reference number. It is used to discourage leaks by making every copy individually identifiable. WalkingPDF applies a fixed watermark text that is the same on every page and every copy; per-recipient dynamic text is a separate capability we do not provide.
What makes a watermark dynamic
A fixed watermark is the same on every copy: every reader sees the same word or the same logo. A dynamic watermark is different on each copy. The most common form stamps the recipient's name, their email address, or a unique reference number onto the document when it is issued, so two copies of the same file are not identical.
The purpose is traceability. If a marked copy turns up somewhere it should not, the unique text points back to the copy it came from.
How it compares with a fixed watermark
A fixed watermark is simpler, and it is what most people mean when they say “watermark”: one status or owner shown to every reader. A dynamic watermark adds accountability on top of that signal, because each recipient knows their own copy is identifiable. Dynamic watermarks are normally produced by document rights or personalisation systems that know who each recipient is, rather than by a one-off stamping tool.
What WalkingPDF does
WalkingPDF applies a fixed watermark: one text, the same on every page of the file you upload. That covers the usual needs, such as CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, a logo or a footer with your details. It does not generate a different watermark for each recipient and it does not track who received which copy.
You can, of course, run the tool once per file to give different documents different marks. That is still a fixed watermark per file, not dynamic per-recipient text. If you need a name or reference stamped automatically on each copy at issue time, you would do that inside a system that already knows the recipients, which is a different kind of product from a PDF watermarking tool.
Frequently asked questions
Can WalkingPDF add a different watermark for each recipient?
No. WalkingPDF applies one fixed watermark text to the file you upload. It does not read a recipient list and does not stamp a separate name onto each copy. Dynamic, per-recipient watermarking is a separate capability that our tool does not offer.
What is the difference between a fixed and a dynamic watermark?
A fixed watermark looks the same on every copy, so it signals a status or an owner to all readers. A dynamic watermark differs on each copy, usually carrying the recipient's details or a unique reference, so any single copy can be traced back to whoever received it.
